Learn to Install Your Own M.2 SSD for PS5® — Like the WD_BLACK SN850P
Make sure your PS5® is updated with the latest system software before you turn off the console and unplug the power cable. Then, follow these steps to install your drive and give your console a capacity boost.
Step 1: Remove the back panel
- Find the PS logo on your PS5®.
- Make sure that side of the console is facing down.
- Remove the panel. Grab its opposite ends, lift them up, and slide the panel down.
Step 2: Remove the M.2 socket cover
- Locate the white M.2 socket cover next to your PS5’s internal cooling fan.
- Remove the exterior screw.
- Then, remove the cover by lifting it up and sliding it off.
- Before installing the drive, locate the interior screw and standoff at the 110 mark.
- Remove the interior screw and the standoff located at that 110 mark.
- Insert the standoff at the 80 mark instead.
- Put the interior screw aside — you’ll need it during step 3.
Step 3: Insert the drive and screw it in
- Position your drive so that its metallic pins face the M.2 connector slot.
- Carefully push the drive into the slot until you hear and feel a click.
- Gently hold down the drive as you reinstall the interior screw.
Step 4: Reinstall the M.2 socket cover and back panel
- Take the socket cover and reinstall it by screwing it in with the exterior screw.
- Reinstall the back panel. Place it back on top of your PS5® and slide it into place.
- Power up your console, follow the installation prompts, and enjoy your new storage expansion.
WD_BLACK SN850P Installation FAQs
The PS5® SSD expansion slot is located beneath the side panels of the PlayStation® 5 console. To access it, carefully remove the side panel and locate the M.2 slot next to the cooling fan.
