HDD Enclosure: The protective outer shell that houses the hard drive and other critical components.

Interface (e.g., USB 3.2, Thunderbolt™ 3):
Connector Types (e.g., USB-C™, Micro-B):
To optimize performance between your external HDD and computer, first find out the fastest interface they both support — like USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt™ 3. Next, look at the shape and design of the ports on each device — this is your connector type, such as USB-C™ or Micro-B.
Once you’ve got this info, select a cable that matches both the interface and connector. Use that cable to connect your hard drive with the corresponding port on your computer.
For more info, check out our Thunderbolt vs. USB-C guide.
RAID stands for Redundant Array of Independent Disks. Think of it as a team-up of multiple hard drives to either boost performance, help offer data protection, or both.
In the context of external hard drives, a RAID setup could involve two or more drives within a single enclosure, working together. So, if one drive fails in certain RAID configurations, your data could still be safe on the other(s), or access speeds could be faster than with a single drive.
For more info, check out our RAID Storage guide.
NAS stands for Network Attached Storage. Picture it as a special external hard drive that connects to your home or office network, allowing multiple devices to access and store data on it simultaneously.
Unlike a Direct Attached Storage (DAS) external hard drive, which typically connects to one computer via USB, NAS connects to your router so that it can be accessible for multiple users, from multiple locations.
