SSD Module: The heart of the external SSD is the SSD module, which contains the NAND flash memory where data is stored, along with a controller that manages data operations.
Enclosure: The SSD module is housed inside an enclosure or casing that protects it from physical damage. It may also act as a heat sink, helping to dissipate heat generated by the SSD during operation.
Data Transfer Ports: The external SSD connects to your computer or other device via ports that are designed for USB or Thunderbolt™ protocols — occassionally both.
Power Delivery: Typically, external SSDs need a dedicated power supply due to their larger size, higher performance, or additional features.
Drive Tray: Some external SSDs have multiple SSD modules inside, which can be customized to support different RAID configurations.
External SSDs:
Portable SSDs:
Thunderbolt is generally the fastest, most versatile technology on the market capable of reaching top speeds, connecting multiple high-res monitors at once, daisy-chaining storage devices, and more — all through a single port.
USB — or Universal Serial Bus — is the most common protocol for transferring data to and from storage devices, connecting accessories such as your mouse and keyboard, and keeping your day-to-day tech charged.
For more information, head to Thunderbolt vs. USB-C.
Ports: The entry point, typically on the back of external SSDs, where you make data transfer connections. Port shapes include USB-C, USB-A, and Micro-B, but they’re also optimized for specific data transfer protocol generations, such as Thunderbolt 3 or USB4.
Connectors: The actual shape of the hardware at either end of a cable, such as USB-C, USB-A, and Micro-B. Corresponds to the shape of ports that you use to make data transfer connections.
Cables: The way you make connections between your storage device and your host device. Cables are optimized for specific data transfer protocol generations, such as Thunderbolt 3 or USB4, but they also need to come with the right connector shapes for your devices’ ports.
For more information, head to Thunderbolt vs. USB-C.
The Basics: Daisy-chaining refers to the process of connecting multiple devices together in a sequence or chain. For SSDs, this involves connecting one SSD to your computer, then connecting a second SSD to the first one, and so on.
Benefits: Daisy-chaining can be beneficial if your computer has limited ports. It allows you to connect multiple SSDs or other peripherals using a single port on your computer.
Required Hardware: To daisy-chain SSDs, you’ll need SSDs and a computer that support a daisy-chain capable protocol like Thunderbolt. Not all connection interfaces support daisy-chaining.
Connection Process: Start by connecting the first SSD to your computer. Then, connect the second SSD to the first SSD using another cable. Repeat this process for any additional SSDs.
Disclosures
1. Speeds vary by product and capacity. 1MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.
2. Applies only to SanDisk Professional PRO-BLADE STATION.
3. Endurance rating varies by product. For G-DRIVE PRO STUDIO SSD: Endurance rating based on DW/D using 4KiB random write workload over five years. (7.68TB x 0.8 DWPD x 365 Days x 5 years = 11,212.8).
4. 1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = 1 trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment and RAID configuration (if applicable).
5. Applies only to SanDisk Professional G-RAID SHUTTLE SSD.
*Applies to select models only.
