Internal Hard Drives

Platters: The disks inside the drive that spin and store data.

Read/Write Heads: Hover just above the platters, reading and writing data.

Actuator: Moves the read/write heads across the surface of the platters.

Spindle: Holds the platters in place and allows them to rotate.

Voice Coil Motor (VCM): Repositions the actuator with high precision and speed.

Data Connector: The port where the data cable connects the HDD to the computer.

Power Connector: Delivers power to the drive, usually from the computer.

Internal SATA HDDs:

• Consumer-Friendly: Commonly found in personal computers and laptops.
• Simplicity: Easier setup, suited for most mainstream applications.
• Compatibility: Supported by most desktop motherboards.

Internal SAS HDDs:

• Performance: Offers faster data transfer rates.
• Reliability: Built for 24/7 operation; often used in servers and enterprise environments.
• Error Correction: Advanced error-checking features for data integrity.
• Dual Ports: Redundancy with two data paths for improved reliability.

OptiNAND is Western Digital’s proprietary technology, integrating iNAND embedded flash devices in hard drives (HDD) to create a flash-enhanced drive. With OptiNAND, an HDD’s key housekeeping functions can take advantage of the speed and capacity of iNAND, freeing up more capacity and improving the overall drive performance.

CMR:

• Performance: Consistent write speeds with no need for data reshuffling.
• Compatibility: Supported by most systems and applications out-of-the-box.
• Predictability: Write operations are straightforward and lack the complexity of managing overlapping tracks.
• Use Cases: Ideal for applications requiring frequent random write operations.

SMR:

• Density: Allows for higher storage capacity due to overlapping tracks.
• Cost-Efficiency: Reduced cost per terabyte due to increased platter density.
• Sequential Writes: Performs well in scenarios with predominantly sequential write operations.
• Use Cases: Suited for archival storage, backup tasks, and infrequent write operations.

UltraSMR fuses hardware, controller, and read channel technologies with proprietary firmware and algorithms to significantly expand the capacity advantage that Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) provides over Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR).

Collectively, these technologies enhance the capacity of an SMR drive by an additional 10%, allowing a gain of 20% over a traditional CMR drive.
